The age of a century, all the advantages
of tradition and an exclusive know- how in the continuous
evolution. With a turnover placing the brand 5th in
the worldwide ranking of sport’s shoe production,
New Balance never stops developing technology for running
and all kinds of sports. The American brand, synonym
for quality, has become an exclusive ‘must’
in the world of sneakers- fashion and lifestyle.
• The story of New Balance begins
in 1906 in Boston, as the English doctor William Riley
founds the New Balance Arch Company, committing
himself to helping people with problem feet.
The firm specializes in making arch supports and prescription
footwear to improve shoe fit and relieve
pain.
• In 1934 Arthur Hall, New Balance’s leading
salesman highly successful selling arch supports
to ‘policemen and other folks who were on their
feet all day’, goes into partnership
with Mister Riley.
• In the 30ies Dan McBride runs the Reddish Road
Race in Massachusetts with the first handmade
running spike developed by the New Balance Arch Company,
thus destined to be the first choice of
many athletes, soon.
• At the beginning of the 60ies New Balance designs
the RC100: the first shoe to feature a rippled
rubber sole. The RC100 is offered in 13 different widths
in order to fit every kind of foot and athlete.
• It is the 20th of April 1972- the day of the
Boston Marathon- as Jim Davis, actually chairman, acquires
the firm. New Balance has 6 employees and produces 30
pairs of running shoes per day in a shop
floor of Boston, for a turnover of 100 000 US Dollar
per year.

| • Jim Davis commits
himself to uphold the company’s founding values:
differentiated widths, internal national production,
performance, teamwork and total satisfaction
of the consumer. Mister Davis immediately senses that
running is an expanding market and focuses on the
product’s quality: the New Balance shoe has to
guarantee brilliant performance. Every exemplar is offered
in differentiated widths- a feature that
will always characterize New Balance shoes.
• In 1975 Tom Fleming wins the New York Marathon
in a pair of New Balance 320s. The successive year ‘Runner’s
World’ awards first place ranking
to the 320 running shoe.
• Towards the end of the 70ies, thanks to Noel
Tamini as editor of the legendary ‘Spiridon’,
New Balance breaks into the European Market.
• In the middle of the 80ies the NB576 is designed.
As niche of the running brand New Balance it becomes
a phenomenon of custom and fashion, on the
feet of the coolest people of Berlin, London, Milan
and Paris.
• In 1996 Gartner Sports in Campo di Trens (BZ)
becomes the new and exclusive importer of the brand
for Italy.
• In 2006 New Balance celebrates its 100th anniversary
and its 10th in collaboration with Gartner Sports.
